The calculation of the S/N is based on the range of the noise in a chromatogram obtained after injection of a blank, observed over a distance equal to 20 times the width at half-height of the peak (20 × W_h) in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.

Le calcul du rapport S/N repose sur l’amplitude du bruit dans un chromatogramme obtenu après injection d’un blanc, observée sur une distance égale à 20 fois la largeur à mi-hauteur du pic (20 × W_h) du chromatogramme obtenu avec la solution témoin.

Il convient de souligner que cette exigence figurait initialement dans le chapitre général de la Ph. Eur. jusqu’en 2009, date à laquelle elle a été révisée et réduite à une distance de (5 × W_h).
Il convient de noter que le chapitre général révisé publié dans la version 11.0 inclut la possibilité de calculer le bruit selon cette approche (5 × W_h) lorsqu’il n’est pas possible d’utiliser l’autre approche (20 × W_h) (en raison de pics dus aux solvants ou aux réactifs, ou émanant de la phase mobile ou de la matrice de l’échantillon, ou encore du fait du programme de température d’une chromatographie en phase gazeuseIt should be emphasised that this requirement was included in the Ph. It is noteworthy that the revised general chapter published in 11.0 includes the possibility to calculate the noise based on the (5 × W_h) approach when the (20 × W_h) approach is not feasible (because of peaks due to solvents or reagents, or arising from the mobile phase or the sample matrix, or due to the gas chromatography temperature programme).
